What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
The practice of getting your brand cited and recommended inside AI answers: what it is, how it differs from SEO, and how it actually works.
The short answer
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and positioning your content so that AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini) cite and recommend your brand when they answer a question. Where SEO competes for a click on a ranked link, GEO competes to be a source the model quotes inside its synthesized answer. It uses the same technical foundations as SEO but adds answer-first structure, extractable facts and clearly sourced claims.
What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of getting your brand cited, quoted and recommended inside the answers that generative AI systems produce. When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best project-management tools" or asks Google a question and gets an AI Overview, the model composes a single synthesized answer and, often, attaches a handful of source links. GEO is the work of making sure your content is what the model reaches for, quotes, and names.
The term was introduced in a 2024 academic paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," presented at the KDD 2024 conference by researchers from Princeton and collaborators. The paper defined generative engines as systems that "generate multi-modal responses by synthesizing information from multiple sources" and framed GEO as the practice of improving a source's visibility inside those responses.
SEO earns a rank. GEO earns a citation. The difference is whether a machine links to you, or speaks for you.
Why does GEO matter now?
Because a growing share of searches end without a click. In a Pew Research Center study of real US browsing behavior in March 2025, about 18% of Google searches produced an AI-generated summary, and users who saw that summary clicked a traditional result only 8% of the time, versus 15% when no summary appeared. Just 1% of AI-summary results led to a click on a link inside the summary itself.
Read that carefully: when the AI answers, the click mostly disappears. The only durable form of visibility left is being the source the answer is built from. If your competitor is cited in the AI Overview and you are not, you are invisible at the exact moment the buyer is deciding, and no amount of ranking below the fold recovers it. That is the gap GEO exists to close.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO and GEO share a spine: a page still has to be crawlable, indexed and genuinely good. But they optimize for different outcomes. SEO wants a human to click a ranked link. GEO wants a machine to cite an extractable passage. The table below lays out where they diverge.

How do AI engines decide what to cite?
Most consumer AI answer engines work by retrieval-augmented generation: the system runs one or more searches against an index, pulls back candidate passages, and a language model synthesizes an answer while attaching citations to the passages it leaned on. Google has confirmed its AI features use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics, to assemble a response.
Which index matters. ChatGPT's web search is built on Bing's index, and the overlap is measurable: a Seer Interactive analysis of ChatGPT citations found that 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results, versus 56% for Google's. If you are invisible in Bing, you are largely invisible in ChatGPT: a purely technical prerequisite most brands miss.
Once you are eligible, what gets you quoted? The most rigorous evidence comes from the Princeton GEO study, which tested nine content tactics across 10,000 queries on a system built to mimic a live generative engine. The standout finding:

The tactics that moved the needle most were adding statistics, quoting authoritative sources, and citing references: in other words, making claims concrete and traceable. That is not a coincidence. A model quoting an answer wants a passage it can lift with confidence: a plain statement of fact, attached to a verifiable source. Vague, unsourced prose gives it nothing to hold onto.
The rest is well-worn ground for anyone building "citable content": clear question-based headings, self-contained answers near the top of a section, freshness (engines lean toward recently updated material), and entity clarity so the model knows exactly who and what you are. How do you actually do GEO?
GEO is less a trick than a discipline. In practice it comes down to six repeatable moves:
- Answer first. Open each page or section with a direct, self-contained answer in two or three sentences: the passage a model can lift verbatim. Everything else supports it.
- Structure for extraction. Use question-based headings that match real queries, short paragraphs, comparison tables and lists. Extractable beats eloquent.
- Make every claim atomic and sourced. Pair each non-obvious fact with a number and a real, dated source. This is the single highest-leverage GEO tactic the research supports.
- Fix the technical entry ticket. Be crawlable and indexable in both Google and Bing, allow the AI crawlers you want, and keep structured data clean so machines parse your entities correctly.
- Establish entity authority. Be consistent about who you are across your site, your profiles and the wider web, so the model can resolve your brand to a trusted entity.
- Keep it fresh. Revisit and re-date your best pages; engines favour recently maintained content, and freshness is a repeated theme in citation analyses.

Does GEO replace SEO?
No, and anyone selling you a clean break is overselling. Google is explicit that to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." It adds that you do not need "to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" and that there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" to appear.
Translated: classic SEO is the entry ticket, and there is no secret AI file that unlocks citation. GEO is the additional layer (answer-first structure, sourced claims, entity clarity) that decides whether a model actually quotes you once you are already eligible.
