The short answer

GEO measurement starts with the answer set, not a traffic chart. Track whether a brand appears, whether it receives a source citation, and how often that happens across a defined prompt set. Generative Engine Optimization gives the work a name, while Citation Share gives the reporting system a clear denominator.

What are GEO measurement terms?

GEO measurement terms define how a team evaluates a brand's presence in generative answers. They turn a collection of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and AI Overview responses into a reporting system that another reviewer can repeat.

The field has no single reporting standard. The original GEO research describes generative engines as systems that synthesize information from multiple sources, and frames measurement as a visibility problem in a black-box environment. Teams therefore need to document the prompt set, engines, test dates, competitor set, and evidence rule before comparing results.

Use GEO for the broader discipline, AEO for answer-focused optimization, and answer engine for the system producing the response. Use Citation Share only when the metric counts answers that cite a tracked domain or brand.

The glossary table defines 30 terms that support a complete measurement record. Its formulas describe rates, while its related-terms column shows which metrics should be read together rather than in isolation.

Which prompt-set terms make GEO measurement reliable?

Reliable GEO measurement depends on a fixed, documented prompt set. Without that control, a rising or falling metric may reflect different questions rather than a real change in answer behavior.

A prompt set is the questions a buyer would actually ask. Preserve the original wording, market, language, device or session conditions when applicable, engine, run date, and response evidence. Add prompts deliberately, then mark the date on which the reporting denominator changed.

Prompt Coverage Rate measures breadth across the question universe. It does not measure whether an answer cited the brand. A prompt can produce Answer Presence without a citation, or it can include a citation without a prominent brand mention in the answer text.

The Prompt Set, Query Universe, Prompt Family, Eligible Answer, Cited Answer, Uncited Answer, Attributable Mention, and Prompt Drift definitions establish the scope of a measurement run. Apply the same eligibility and attribution rules to every prompt in that run.

What does citation share mean?

Citation Share means the share of eligible AI answers that cite your tracked domain or brand. It answers a narrow question: when the selected prompts produced eligible answers, how often did the engine attribute information to you?

The metric needs a precise citation rule. Record whether the target is a root domain, a specific URL, a brand name, or a product name. Also record how an engine displays sources, because an inline numbered source, a source card, and a linked publisher label are different surfaces.

Citation Share should sit beside Citation Count and Answer Presence. A high count can come from a large prompt volume. A high presence rate can come from mentions that carry no source attribution. These measures describe different evidence.

Citation Rate, Source Inclusion Rate, Citation Prominence, Position in Answer, Citation Persistence, Freshness, and Answer Consistency qualify the headline rate. They help explain whether a citation was visible, repeatable, current, or concentrated in one answer location.

How do AI visibility and AI citation differ?

AI visibility records whether the answer surfaces a brand. AI citation records whether the answer attributes information to that brand or domain through a qualifying source reference.

The distinction matters because a brand can be listed among options with no citation, while another source supports the answer. An engine can also cite a page in a source area without naming the brand prominently in the response text. Treat each event separately before rolling results into a dashboard.

Do not call every mention a citation. Preserve a response capture, prompt, engine, run time, result classification, and destination URL where available. That evidence lets a reviewer recertify the result later.

Competitor Set, Share of Voice, Engine Coverage, Engine-Specific Share, Retrieval Variance, Baseline, and Reporting Window define the comparison context. A result becomes less useful when it does not identify which engines, competitors, prompts, and dates produced it.

How should a team calculate and report GEO metrics?

Calculate GEO metrics from an evidence table before making a dashboard. Each row should capture a prompt, prompt family, engine, test date, eligibility status, answer-presence result, citation result, cited URL when available, and reviewer notes.

For Citation Share, divide qualifying cited answers by eligible answers. For Prompt Coverage Rate, divide prompts with the defined event by all prompts in scope. For Share of Voice, divide one brand's qualifying events by all qualifying events for the documented competitor set.

Keep both the raw count and the rate. Rates make different prompt volumes comparable. Counts show how much observed evidence sits behind the rate. A small denominator can produce a dramatic percentage, so every report should show the numerator and denominator.

The GEO paper reported that its evaluated strategies could improve visibility by up to 40 percent in its experimental setting. That result is research context, not a forecast for a specific site, category, engine, or content program. Measurement should report observed citation and presence outcomes without promising a fixed lift.

  1. Use one evidence rule per report, then apply it to every engine and competitor.
  2. Keep prompt additions and deletions in a dated change log so the denominator remains auditable.
  3. Separate Answer Presence, citation, and commercial outcomes. A citation observation does not establish a signup, call, or booking.
  4. Use Citation Share as the headline metric when the goal is to be cited, then use Answer Presence and Share of Voice to explain the result.

Which GEO terms should appear in an executive report?

An executive GEO report should lead with Citation Share, then show the prompt denominator and the change from the documented baseline. Add engine-specific results when they explain a meaningful difference.

The next layer should show Answer Presence, Prompt Coverage Rate, Citation Count, and Share of Voice against the named competitor set. These measures clarify whether a citation gap comes from weak answer inclusion, missing source attribution, narrow prompt coverage, or competitor dominance.

Keep the technical record attached to the report. A decision-maker needs the conclusion and denominator. An operator needs the prompt list, response captures, source URLs, response dates, classification rules, and exceptions.

The report should state the measurement window and any change to the prompt set or eligibility rule. That context prevents a month-over-month comparison from implying precision that the underlying study design does not support.

  1. Report Citation Share as cited eligible answers divided by eligible answers.
  2. Report Prompt Coverage Rate as prompts with the defined event divided by prompts tested.
  3. Report Answer Presence separately from citations.
  4. Name every engine included in the rollup.
  5. List the competitor set and reporting window beside Share of Voice.
  6. Retain the evidence table so results can be checked after the run.

Key takeaways

  • Citation Share is cited eligible answers divided by all eligible answers.
  • AI visibility and AI citation are separate events and need separate fields.
  • Prompt Coverage Rate measures breadth across a defined prompt set.
  • A fixed prompt set, engine list, citation rule, and reporting window make results comparable.
  • Citation Count adds volume context but cannot replace a rate.
  • Share of Voice only becomes meaningful when the competitor set and qualifying-event rule are explicit.

Frequently asked questions

What does citation share mean?

Citation Share is the percentage of eligible AI answers that contain a qualifying citation to a tracked domain, page, brand, or product. Calculate it as cited eligible answers divided by all eligible answers, multiplied by 100.

What is prompt coverage rate?

Prompt Coverage Rate is the percentage of tested prompts that produce a defined event, such as a citation or attributable brand mention. The event must be named in the metric label because coverage for presence differs from coverage for citations.

What is the difference between AI visibility and AI citation?

AI visibility means a brand appears in an answer. AI citation means the answer explicitly attributes information to that brand or domain through a qualifying source reference. A response can have one event without the other.

What is an eligible answer in GEO measurement?

An eligible answer is a response included in the denominator because it meets the study rules. Rules commonly exclude errors, empty outputs, refusals, or responses that do not address the tested prompt.

Why should Citation Count and Citation Share both be reported?

Citation Count shows the observed number of qualifying citations. Citation Share normalizes that count against eligible answers, making results easier to compare across prompt volumes and reporting windows.

Can a brand have strong Answer Presence but weak Citation Share?

Yes. An answer engine can list a brand without citing its site, or it can cite another source while mentioning the brand. Track both measures to identify whether the gap is inclusion, attribution, or both.
