[AI Search Visibility]
The best generative engine optimization tools, tested
We compared six generative engine optimization tools, Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush and Scrunch AI, on what each actually tracks and what it costs.
The short answer
Six tools currently do real GEO tracking: Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Scrunch AI. Prices start at $29 a month and run past $650, and each measures a different mix of citations, answer presence and citation share. The right pick depends on your budget, how many engines you need covered, and whether you are tracking one brand or many clients.
What is a generative engine optimization tool, and why do you need one?
A generative engine optimization (GEO) tool tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention your brand, cite your pages, or recommend you over a competitor when someone asks a question in your category. Search Console tells you what ranked. A GEO tool tells you what got cited, by which model, for which prompt.
The gap here is measurement, not visibility. Only 14% of marketers currently track AI search citations, even though 89% of brands already appear in AI-generated answers, according to an April 2026 survey covered by GlobeNewswire. Most brands are already being cited or ignored by these models. Almost nobody is watching it happen.
That is the job these six tools do. None of them will get you cited (more on that at the end), but each gives you a different lens on your current citation share: the percentage of relevant AI answers in your category that name you.
What does each GEO tool actually measure?
Every tool on this list answers a version of the same three questions, just with different depth and different price tags. First: does the brand get mentioned at all, across a defined set of prompts (answer presence). Second: when it is mentioned, is it cited with a link, a quote, or just a name-drop (citation tracking). Third: how does that compare to named competitors answering the same prompts (share of voice).
Where they diverge is in the details: how many prompts you can track, how many engines are covered, whether the prompt set is fixed or fully custom, and whether the tool stops at monitoring or also tries to help fix what it finds. The table below breaks out what each tool tracks and what it costs to start.
| Tool | What it tracks | Engines covered | Starting price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profound | Prompt-level citations, answer presence, share of voice | ChatGPT at entry tier; Perplexity and AI Overviews added at Growth | $99/mo (Growth tier $399/mo for 3 engines) | Enterprise teams that need deep prompt-level citation data |
| Peec AI | Citation sources, visibility, sentiment, competitor benchmarking | 3 engines of choice: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews or AI Mode | About EUR 85/mo (Starter) | Agencies running AI visibility across multiple client projects |
| Otterly.AI | Citation tracking, GEO URL audits, prompt monitoring | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot | $29/mo (Lite, 15 prompts) | Small teams testing GEO tracking before committing budget |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Citations, mentions, share of voice, cited domains and pages | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini | About EUR 358/mo, plus a base Ahrefs plan from $129/mo | Teams already inside the Ahrefs ecosystem |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | Keyword-level AI mentions, competitor research, AI readiness audit | ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity | $99/mo per domain (add-on) | Semrush users who want a bolt-on AI visibility view |
| Scrunch AI | Mentions, citations, sentiment, share of voice, plus AI content delivery | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot at Core tier | $250/mo (Core) | Teams that want monitoring and AI-facing content delivery together |
Is Profound worth it for enterprise-scale citation tracking?
Profound is built for teams that want prompt-level citation data across a wide set of engines, but the entry tier is thin. The Starter plan runs $99 a month and tracks ChatGPT only. To see how Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews describe your brand, you have to move up to the $399-a-month Growth plan, which covers three engines and 100 prompts.
Profound does not publish pricing past that point. Third-party trackers report enterprise deployments running $2,000 to $5,000-plus a month depending on platform count and seats, which puts it at the top of the range in this list. It fits teams that already know they need deep, prompt-by-prompt citation data across many models and have the budget for it, not teams still deciding whether GEO tracking is worth doing at all.
Is Peec AI the better fit for agencies?
Peec AI is built around projects rather than a single brand workspace, which is why agencies gravitate to it. The Starter plan (about EUR 85 a month) gives you one project and three AI engines of your choosing, and the Pro and Advanced tiers add more projects and countries rather than more engines. That structure matters if you are running AI visibility for several clients instead of one brand.
It tracks citation sources, brand sentiment and competitor benchmarking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and AI Mode, choosing three at a time on the lower tiers, with extra engines available as paid add-ons. Enterprise pricing starts at a published $499 a month rather than sitting behind a sales call, which is unusual in this category.
Is Otterly.AI enough to start tracking GEO on a budget?
Otterly.AI is the cheapest real option here. The Lite plan is $29 a month for 15 prompts across four engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot), with unlimited team seats and daily tracking. Gemini and Google AI Mode cost extra on every tier.
The Standard plan ($189/mo) and Premium plan ($489/mo) add prompt volume, API and MCP access, and GEO URL audits, which check whether your own pages are structured in a way models can parse and cite. For a team that has not tracked AI citations before and wants to see the shape of the problem before committing real budget, Otterly.AI is the lowest-friction way in.
Does Ahrefs Brand Radar make sense if you already pay for Ahrefs?
Brand Radar is not a standalone product. It sits inside Ahrefs and requires an active base subscription (from $129/mo for Lite) on top of its own fee. The Select Platforms tier runs about EUR 358 a month for 2,500 custom prompt checks across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini. The All Platforms tier is about EUR 654 a month for unlimited checks and the full prompt database.
What you get for that price is scale: Ahrefs draws on a database it describes as 421 million-plus organic prompts, plus cited-domain and cited-page reporting that plugs directly into the site data you already have. If your team lives in Ahrefs for keyword and backlink work, Brand Radar removes a login. If it does not, the all-in cost, commonly $800 to $1,100-plus a month once the base plan is included, is steep for a tool you would run in isolation.
Is Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit worth the add-on price?
Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is a $99-a-month add-on, not a core plan, and it is priced per domain: one domain, 25 tracked prompts, and reports covering visibility overview, prompt research, competitor research, brand performance and an AI-readiness site audit. Extra prompts, extra domains and extra seats each add $99 a month or more.
It leans more keyword-oriented than prompt-native compared with the dedicated tools on this list, which makes it a natural fit if your team already runs Semrush for organic search and wants an AI visibility read without adopting a second platform. Run it across several domains or clients, though, and the per-domain fee adds up fast: real-world setups commonly land between $300 and $1,090-plus a month.
What does Scrunch AI do that pure trackers do not?
Scrunch starts where the others stop. Monitoring is table stakes at $250 a month for the Core plan (125 prompts, four engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot), but the platform also includes a content delivery layer that serves AI-optimized versions of your pages to crawlers and AI agents without changing what human visitors see.
That combination, tracking plus content delivery, is the reason to consider Scrunch over a pure monitoring tool. It is also why the Growth tier jumps to $500 a month to add Claude and Gemini coverage, and why agencies pay $500 a month for Agency Core. If all you need is a citation dashboard, this is more platform than most teams require.
Which GEO tool fits which job?
Match the tool to the job, not the other way around.
- Testing GEO tracking for the first time on a small budget: Otterly.AI Lite at $29/mo.
- Running AI visibility across multiple client accounts: Peec AI, built around projects rather than one brand.
- Enterprise-scale, prompt-level citation depth across many engines: Profound Growth or Enterprise.
- Already living inside Ahrefs for SEO work: Brand Radar, if the combined cost fits the budget.
- Already paying for Semrush and want a bolt-on view: the AI Visibility Toolkit, priced per domain.
- Monitoring plus AI-facing content delivery in one platform: Scrunch AI.
What can no GEO tool do for you?
Every tool on this list measures citation share. None of them manufacture it. A dashboard that shows ChatGPT ignoring your brand on 40 relevant prompts tells you the size of the problem. It does not close it. Closing it takes content that is accurate, current and comprehensive enough for a model to trust it as a source, published at a scale most in-house teams cannot sustain on their own.
That is the difference between tracking and Citation Engineering: measurement versus the work of earning the citation in the first place. Treat these tools as your instrument panel, not your growth plan.
Key takeaways
- Six tools currently do real GEO tracking: Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Scrunch AI.
- Starting prices range from $29/mo (Otterly.AI Lite) to well over $650/mo (Ahrefs Brand Radar All Platforms plus a base Ahrefs plan).
- Only 14% of marketers track AI search citations even though 89% of brands already appear in AI answers, so most teams are flying blind here.
- Profound and Scrunch go deepest on prompt-level citation data; Semrush and Ahrefs bolt AI visibility onto SEO suites you may already own.
- No GEO tool gets you cited. They measure citation share; earning it takes content built at a scale and quality most in-house teams cannot sustain alone.
- Match the tool to the job: cheap first test, agency multi-client, enterprise depth, or convenience inside a suite you already pay for.

Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of getting a brand mentioned, cited or recommended by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, rather than just ranked on a search results page.
Which GEO tool is the cheapest way to start?
Otterly.AI's Lite plan, at $29 a month for 15 prompts across four engines, is the lowest published entry price among the tools compared here.
Do GEO tools track the same metric the same way?
No. They cover different engines, different prompt volumes and different definitions of a citation, so a citation share number from one tool is not directly comparable to another's without checking methodology.
Can I track AI citations for free?
None of the six tools compared here has a full free tier. Most offer a trial period instead, Otterly.AI offers 14 days, before you commit to a paid plan.
Should a team use more than one GEO tool?
Some do, often pairing a broad tracker with a suite add-on they already pay for, like Semrush or Ahrefs, but running two tools mainly makes sense once you need to cross-check citation counts or cover engines one tool misses.
Do GEO tools also help me get cited, not just measure it?
Measurement is what these tools do. Getting cited depends on the content itself, its accuracy, freshness and coverage at a scale that shows up consistently across the prompts these tools track, which is a separate, ongoing body of work for improving citation share.
